Victoria delays Murray Darling agenda
19 Nov 2008

The Murray Darling Basin reform agenda looks likely to be delayed until well into next year as the Victorian parliament struggles to pass the enabling legislation. The states must all pass laws handing the management of the rivers to the commonwealth for the plan to proceed. NSW, Queensland and South Australia have all done so but Victoria’s enabling bills are now held up in an upper house committee which is due to report on December 2. The reform agenda may also face problems passing the senate where Greens, independents and the opposition are planning to amend the commonwealth legislation to stop Victoria building the Sugarloaf pipeline. That pipe will deliver 75 gigalitres from the Goulburn River to Melbourne. Source: Financial Review 19/11/08
