Safety rules hit farmers
24 Mar 2004

Livestock carriers and farmers will soon be forced to erect safety barriers or wear safety harnesses when working more than 2 metres off the ground, under new Victorian protection measures to take effect from April 1.

The regulations will apply to farmers working on sheds or windmills, fuel bowsers or haystacks and trucks, or when climbing silos. They will also apply to livestock carriers when the tops of crates are 4 metres above the ground.

Although the new rules apply to all workplaces, next week the Victorian Farmers' Federation will ask WorkCover Minister Rob Hulls for an exemption for agricultural activities.
