Qld farm death toll since 1990 passes 100
1 Apr 2004

Between 1990 and 2002, 77 farm workers were killed by tractors, 11 by all-terrain vehicles, 10 by farm bikes and two died as a result of becoming entangled in rotating PTO shafts. During the same period, there were 58 tractor accidents leading to disabling injuries, seven related to ATVs, 13 from farm bikes and seven from people becoming entangled with rotating PTO shafts.

The statistics were presented by Workplace Health and Safety - Queensland at a recent Tractor and Machinery Association meeting in Brisbane. Principal WHSQ adviser Keith Ferguson tabled them as part of an overview of Queensland's ongoing farm safety audit relating to mobile plant. The program, to be completed by April, has so far audited 193 of a selected 500 farms for workplace health and safety practices relating to mobile plant. WHSQ says an audit report will be released during the second half of 2004.
