Steel recycling offer
9 May 2005

Thanks to soaring world steel and scrap prices, Smorgon Steel said it was becoming economic to recycle rusting steel abandoned in forgotten farm machinery. Smorgon wants farmers to drag their rusting old tractors, ploughs and harvesters from the bottom paddock. Smorgon Steel's estimated there would be more than one million tonnes of steel available for recycling on farms. Smorgon will pay in cash, or offer a contra payment, with the farmer able to buy $120 worth of new steel product for every $100 worth of scrap steel sold. Smorgon will also offer to donate $15 for every tonne of scrap bought to the local fire brigade.
