ACID test on water reform 27 Jun 2005
The Australian Council for Infrastructure Development chief Dennis O'Neill, said "there isn't a shortage of water in this country". ACID wants Sydney’s water shortage could be solved by buying water from inefficient irrigators in the Murrumbidgee and transporting it using pipelines and tunnels via Canberra to Goulburn and into the city's catchment area "The water just happens to be either in the wrong location or currently allocated to less valuable uses. This solution is about transferring some of that water to a more valuable end use," O'Neill said. The proposal builds on an option being considered by Canberra's water manager, ACTEW. Water originally from the Snowy River would be captured in Tantangara Dam, then flow 100km down the Murrumbidgee River to be collected in a weir, then pumped into Googong Reserve.
