Higher truck rego proposed
11 Oct 2005

The National Transport Commission will recommend increases in registration and diesel excise charges on trucks. Any decision to increase fees must be taken by state transport ministers meeting at the Australian Transport Council. An NTC discussion paper estimated the trucking industry should pay $1.7 billion a year in registration and excise, up from $1.3 billion in 1998, to pay for road costs. The NTC discussion paper canvassed a range of different combinations of registration and excise increases to cover road costs. It illustrates possible increases in registration for B-double trucks from $7565 to up to $20,250 and road train costs from $8233 to $18,500. The higher fees would apply to 400,000 trucks.
