Farmers buying cheaper tractors
2 May 2006

Tractor sales in the March 2006 quarter were just 1.3 per cent lower than for the same period in 2005. But the value of those sales was down more than 11 per cent. Farmers are buying lesser powered machines. The number of tractors over 90kW (120 sold in the first quarter of this year) was more than 15 per cent lower than the first quarter of 2005. The slow start to sales of larger tractors comes on top of a poor year for sales of larger tractors through last year when total sales finished the year more than 25 per cent lower than sales through 2004.

Overall, the value of all tractor sales across Australia in 2005 was more than $71 million lower than the value of tractors sold in 2004.
