Plenty of grain, not enough trains
27 Jun 2007

Concerns are being raised that with the expected bumper grain crop in NSW and Victoria this year the transport infrastructure will not be up to the task. According to figures from ABARE the areas sown with crops has increased by 27 per cent in Victoria and 14 per cent in NSW with overall production increases even higher. Rail freight provider Pacific National has reduced its numbers of trains and staff due to the reduced volumes during the drought. This, combined with under-investment in maintaining rail infrastructure, threatens the ability to get the harvest to markets.
