Victorian rail operator shuts shop 13 Dec 2007
Asciano has decided to close its rail freight business, a move which the Victorian Farmers Federation says could result in one extra 60 tonne B-double truck hitting the state's roads every two minutes. Estimates by the VFF show that trucks would need to travel 60 million kilometres to transport the grain harvest. "Without substantial investment in rail transport, the Victorian community can expect more trucks on the road, more road fatalities and more farming families unable to cope with the pressures of additional costs," said the VFF's grain group president, Geoff Nalder.
