SPC Ardmona hopes for tariff reduction

SPC Ardmona is hoping that the proposed free trade agreement with the US comes to fruition, and says it could mean a $20 million-a-year, or 4 per cent, boost to its revenues. Currently the US market for packaged fruit is protected by a 17 per cent tariff.
SPC Ardmona's CEO Nigel Garrard said he's hopeful that the company's products going into the US will have their tariff reduced because the US is a net importer of such products. He said the 17 per cent US tariff would be the difference between being profitable and not.
At present, SPC Ardmona exports canned pineapple to the US from its plant in Thailand.
Mr Garrard said he's also optimistic about some changes in EU tariffs but not in the short term. The tariff in Europe is also 17 per cent.
