Fruit growers demand price rise 26 Nov 2003
Goulburn Valley canning fruit growers are asking SPC Ardmona to increase prices, following a September frost that almost destroyed the whole crop of early variety apricots and plums, and up to 70 per cent of the peach and nectarine crop. Australian Canning Fruitgrowers' Association said growers believe a price increase is the only appropriate response from SPC Ardmona.
The Goulburn Valley is SPC Ardmona's main supplier of canning fruit. Last season, there were close to 13,000 tonnes of canning apricots but due to this year's frosts, only 1,000 tonnes. There were up to 53,000 tonnes of canning peaches last season but this has fallen to about 45,000 tonnes.
Victorian Peach and Apricot Growers' Association said the industry had three poor years of yields and low prices, and now growers are facing lower tonnages.
SPC Ardmona will meet with the growers' consultative group today, November 26, to finalise prices.
