Growers hunt for pickers
7 Jan 2004

Victoria's fruit and vegetable harvest is in full swing again but growers are facing the perennial problem of finding suitable labour to pick their crops. Growers say it's becoming harder every year to find people who are willing to do the hard physical work.

The problem is exacerbated by the Federal Government's crackdown on immigrant fruit pickers in 2002. One grower said he liked to use imported labour as these people were reliable and worked hard. Another said he had tried to sponsor workers but the Department of Immigration had kyboshed his attempts.

However, Stan Cornish, of the Northern Victorian Fruitgrowers' Association, said that Goulburn Valley growers would have no problems obtaining fruit pickers this season.

Weekly Times, 7/1/04, page 5.
