Tassie cherries hit US market
29 Jan 2004

Tasmanian cherries have passed US bioterrorism and quarantine inspections and will be available in the US for the first time on a commercial basis. The 1,300 kilogram shipment of Lennonville Orchards' Black Devil cherries should hit Minnesota supermarket shelves by the weekend.

The orchard's owner Jon Grunseth said it's the first commercial shipment to the US and a lot of hurdles had to be overcome through three years of trial and error. Fruit from Australia's mainland can't enter the US due to the presence of fruit-fly.

Black Devil cherries are dark red and grow to 28mm across or more. They're of the Lapin variety and are one of nine varieties grown at Lennonville Orchards. Most of the orchard's cherries sell in Australia, Taiwan and other countries.

The Mercury, 29/1/04.
