Safeway's berry label rejected 4 Feb 2004
Victorian berry growers have rejected a Safeway move to enforce the use of its labels on packaging. Safeway wants all berry growers, including strawberry producers, to accept generic labels on fruit punnets. But the Australian Blueberry Growers' Association says while the retailer has the right to market produce in whatever way it thinks best, growers have the right to display under their own brands. Growers spend a lot of money building up their product identities, which consumers are aware of, the association president said. If the fruit is in a Safeway punnet it's almost impossible to sell it elsewhere.
The Victorian Strawberry Growers' Association says the industry is completely opposed to Safeway's move. The industry has its own bar code which allows it to sell strawberries into any market. Safeway is also trying to force all growers to use lidded punnets.
