Humble spud wins blue chip status
5 Mar 2004

Tasmania sealed its crown as Australia's potato state yesterday when Simplot opened a $35 million expansion to its Ulverstone french fry processing capacity. Simplot Australia's MD said the upgrade further secured the prospects of Tasmanian vegetable growers. The drive for productivity is essential to keep the Australian industry competitive with low-cost exporters like New Zealand, MD Terry O'Brien said. The company is also doing a lot to help growers increase their efficiency.

The expansion is good news for Tasmania's potato industry, as Simplot closed down its Scottsdale plant in December 2003. The State Primary Industries Minister said the new investment is a great boost for North West Tasmania's regional economy.

The Mercury, 5/3/04.
