Boort tomato grower named rural women's award winner 19 Mar 2004
Marilyn Lanyon, a tomato grower from Boort, has been named as the winner of the 2003 Rural Women's Awards from eight finalists in Victoria. Mrs Lanyon has been growing processing tomatoes for more than 25 years on her irrigation farm and in 2001 turned a serious oversupply problem into a value-adding opportunity by establishing a new business venture called Simply Green Tomatoes. She was awarded a $15,000 bursary, as well as a place at the Australian Institute of Company Directors course.
The runner-up was Beverly Fisher, a third generation orchardist from Cobram on the Murray River. Her project involved the establishment of a juice factory to help local farmers sell excess fruit. She was awarded a $5,000 development grant.
All eight finalists received $2,000 each to go towards their proposed projects.
