Tassie apples top of the flops 14 Apr 2004
Apple crops around Australia are down 60-70 per cent on last year's bumper harvest - which means fruit from Tasmania is in demand and commanding good prices. Apples which would normally be exported from the Apple Isle will go instead to mainland markets.
Harvesting of Tasmania's commercial apples is almost finished, with only later varieties such as Pink Ladies, Fujis and Democrats still on the trees. Tasmanian crops are also down this year - up to 40 per cent.
The Tasmanian Apple and Pear Growers' Association said about 50 per cent of Tasmania's apples usually go overseas, representing 70 per cent of Australia's total apple exports. But that probably won't be the case this year, with such high demand coming from mainland markets.
