Speedy spud machine is the pick of inventors' crop
20 Apr 2004

A 73-year-old farmer from South Australia has designed a four-row potato harvester which can harvest 30 tonnes of potatoes an hour. Jeff Buckley says when he was a teenager it took a day to dig up less than a tonne of potatoes by hand. He and a neighbour started off by importing a harvester in 1950 but it was "about a 99 per cent failure" as it wasn't suited to Australian conditions, so he designed one himself which he perfected in 2002.

Mr Buckley's invention is just one of many which will be on show at the Innovation Expo in Mount Gambier on May 13. It's the first time the event will be held in regional South Australia.
