Island to become fruit and vegetable oasis
28 Apr 2004

Torrens Island will become a major hydroponic fruit and vegetable producer with the development of a $75 million greenhouse precinct. Work on the project is expected to begin later this year, with the first crops produced in 2005. The precinct's developer BioHouse said more than $50 million worth of fruit and vegetable crops will be produced annually. Strawberries, capsicums and hydroponic tomatoes will be produced in the first stage of the project.

More than 300 people will be employed directly on the island and the project will become a major driver for South Australia's greenhouse industry. A new power station will also be built which will supply power, heat and at least 30,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, necessary for plants to grow. The hydroponic crops will be grown using demineralised bore water.

The Advertiser, 28/4/04.
