Big dry hits juicers
29 Apr 2004

Australia is facing a 30 per cent shortfall in its Valencia orange crop for the next two years, Australian Citrus Growers said yesterday. ACG chief Judith Damiani said that this year local orchards would only produce 400,000 tonnes of valencias, which are vital to the domestic fresh juice industry. Most years farmers produce 600,000 tonnes.

The Australian orange industry has been battling cheap imported juice concentrates for some years. Farmers faced a further blow when the drought severely reduced the amount of irrigation available.

Herald Sun, 29/4/04, page 12.
