Chips are down, but the spud fights back 30 Apr 2004
Potato farmers want weight-conscious consumers to loosen up and reach for a spud. Sales of potatoes have fallen, as consumers see them as fattening. Farmers say the potato has been overlooked in popular diets in favour of food perceived to be lower in carbohydrates, but spuds can actually hold their own.
The potato has only two-thirds the carbohydrates of rice, macaroni or pasta, the same amount as ice-cream, and a quarter of the amount in milk chocolate. It also has five times the amount of Vitamin C found in an apple and the same amount as green peas. Farmers say these facts don’t get through to consumers very often. The industry hasn’t been doing enough to give the consumer what they want, and we need to take a glance at what they have been doing with other packaged foods, such as rice as pasta, Mintool-based Kentish Potatoes says.
