Jumbos jet in pickers 6 May 2004
Fruit pickers may be easier to find next season following the establishment of a new low-cost airline by Queensland-based travel company BackpackersXpress, which will bring potential young workers from the UK. The airline is planning six flights a week from Manchester to Melbourne. The flights cater exclusively for backpackers, offering them an all-in-one package which the company said could include information about harvest jobs. Employers and agencies are invited to contact BackpackersXpress (07) 3249 4888.
Backpackers frequently combine holidays with work and employment agencies say they are now a key part of the harvest labour workforce, going from one state to another to help bring in fruit and vegetable crops. But Shepparton's Work Trainers Employment Services said they need basic requirements including visas, tax file numbers and bank accounts. These are relatively easy to get but require some preliminary paperwork.
