Growers push to ban Kiwi fruit
2 Jun 2004

Apple and pear growers protesting in Sydney against the import of New Zealand apples said they've been encouraged by the positive reactions of consumers on the issue. The growers handed out apples in Sydney's CBD and Penrith to highlight their campaign against the imports, which they say could bring fire blight to Australia and wreck an industry that employs 250,000 people.

A grower from Orange in the NSW central west said Sydneysiders had responded well to the campaign. He was surprised by how many consumers are aware already and asking to sign a petition.

If the quarantine law changes are approved, it would end an 83-year ban on New Zealand apples coming into Australia.
