Lamb off menu as drought hits prices 5 Jul 2004
The drought has driven up the price of lamb to the extent that some restaurants are removing it from their menus and the Sunday roast is becoming a rare treat. Lamb prices have increased by about 50 per cent since 2001, with a typical leg of lamb now priced at about $30 and a rack of lamb costing $39 a kilo.
The Sheepmeat Council says supplies dropped about 10 per cent between 2001 and 2004, due to the drought, while at the same time strong demand both domestically and internationally is adding pressure to prices.
Other meats, such as beef, and other foodstuffs have also been hit. Beef prices have risen by 30 per cent and fruit and vegetables by 13 per cent.
