Growers praise ALP's mandatory code 7 Jul 2004
Fruit and vegetable producers are positive about Labor's proposed mandatory code of conduct, which would protect them from unfair commercial contracts. The news comes just days after the National Farmers' Federation criticised the Federal Government for failing to strengthen the existing voluntary code.
Queensland Fruit and Vegetable Growers said the Labor policy was "right on the money" in terms of recognising issues that affect the sector. Growers have long complained that the strong buying power of supermarkets and wholesalers puts them in a weak bargaining position.
The National Farmers' Federation said last night that it's still reviewing Labor's policy. But the Australian Chamber of Fruit and Vegetable Industries said a mandatory code would be expensive to set up and impose unnecessary administrative costs on both producers and buyers.
