Visa boost to bush jobs
8 Jul 2004

Rural communities struggling to fill job vacancies should benefit from a new Federal immigration program. The Government introduced the Skilled Independent Regional visa last week, which will make it easier for country areas to bring in skilled overseas migrants.

The visa allows rural areas to accept migrants with professional or trade qualifications that match a region's skills shortages. So in the Goulburn Valley, for example, migrants with skills in the food processing sector could be sought if no suitably qualified Australians were available.

One of the conditions of the new visa is that the migrants would be required stay in the rural areas for at least two years.
