Don't dump on us, beekeepers say 14 Jul 2004
Sunraysia beekeepers fear a boycott of their honey may follow if the Victorian Government decides to locate a toxic dump site at Nowingi. Corowa and Dingley wholesalers have already stated they won't accept honey produced near the dump site.
Beechworth Honey's Jodie Goldsworthy said the area is renowned for "some of the finest quality Mallee species varietal honey". The need for testing for possible contaminants would result in lower returns and increased record-keeping.
The Victorian Apiarist Association's Sunraysia branch said there are over 20 officially registered bee sites within 8km of the site, with up to 400 hives each. Storing toxic waste at Nowingi could deter beekeepers from elsewhere from bringing their hives into the region for the Spring and Summer horticulture pollination season.
A spokesman for Major Projects Minister claimed the facility would have no impact on the local bee population or honey production.
