Growers back ID card for workers 22 Jul 2004
Queensland fruit and vegetable growers are backing Labor's plan to make all overseas workers carry photographic ID cards. The industries, which are heavily reliant on foreign holiday-makers and backpackers to boost picking and harvesting numbers, say ID cards would make it easier for bosses to see who's eligible to work.
Industry spokesman Mark Panitz said yesterday the challenge for growers is that they're looking for labour during their peak picking or harvesting season and they're absolutely flat out. They don't have time to make phone calls to double and triple check details.
Labor has promised to introduce photo ID cards for all foreign workers in Australia if it wins the federal election.
