Seedling firm wins Smart Award 3 Aug 2004
Withcott Seedlings (Queensland) Pty Ltd has won the 2004 Premier of Queensland's SMART Award for outstanding achievement in the field of agribusiness. The award is sponsored by CSIRO Livestock Industries and recognises Withcott Seedlings' use of integrated technologies to create new business opportunities. The company is the major supplier of vegetable seedlings to the east coast of Australia and a vital link in the fresh food chain in Australia and the Asia-Pacific.
CSIRO Livestock Industries' chief Shaun Coffey said the organisation's sponsorship of the award is closely linked to its mandate to provide research solutions that enable Australia's agribusiness industries to be globally competitive.
Current CSIRO Livestock Industries research projects include: identification of genetic markers for meat marbling and tenderness in beef cattle; international collaboration to sequence the cattle genome and build the tools necessary to better understand desirable production traits; and development of rapid molecular diagnostics systems capable of identifying prawn viruses.
