Citrus canker: farm loses 90pc of trees
13 Aug 2004

Almost a quarter of a million fruit trees on Evergreen Farms will be destroyed after further evidence of citrus canker was discovered yesterday. Queensland's Primary Industries Minister Henry Palaszczuk said 90 per cent of Evergreen Farms' trees would be burned. Of the original 375 hectares of citrus on the property, all but about 25 hectares have now been marked for destruction, he stated.

So far, Evergreen is the only orchard in the state to be affected by the disease, which could threaten Queensland's $100 million citrus industry. The State Government has already spent $5 million on citrus canker eradication and could spend up to $10 million over the two-year surveillance program.

Australian Financial Review, 13/8/04.
