Japan’s non tariff barriers tough to crack
12 Oct 2004

Australian exporters complain that Japan is failing to remove obstacles to imports. The 42nd Australia-Japan Joint Business Conference yesterday was told that Japan's failure to adapt and its dislike for Australian goods meant businesses were increasingly forced to look elsewhere for export sales. Russell Witcombe, managing director of citrus exporters, the Mildura Fruit Co, said Australian industry had been disappointed in the past when pest and disease requirements made trade commercially unsustainable. He said Japan replaced a high tariff regime and import quotas with fresh barriers "increasing the cost of supply and the risk of product rejection".
