Fruit growers fear packaging costs hike 8 Nov 2004
Supermarket chains are driving a shake-up in fruit handling methods by growers. Stone fruit growers have been told Woolworths wants a new design of cartons to minimise handling from farm to supermarket shelves. Carton manufacturers Visy and Amcor are running trials on behalf of Woolworths and Coles which want a uniform carton in place by 2006. Visy has told northern NSW stone fruit growers they would have to abide by the chain stores' wishes because the two retailers accounted for 60 per cent of the domestic fruit and vegetable market. Woolworths want to introduce a "one-touch" concept, which means the only time a fruit carton was handled was when it was taken off the pallet and placed on display in stores.
