Citrus canker squeezes Burnett orchardists
9 Nov 2004

Citrus Canker is starting to have an impact on some Queensland growers, with one prominent orchardist in the Bundaberg region selling out after failing to secure bank finance on favourable terms. Jim Mullett, said his 1066 hectare property and business, Monduran Citrus, was on the market because he has been unable to secure refinancing by banks or other lenders. Mullett said he made the decision to sell because of a number of circumstances, including citrus canker. At least 12 orchards in the Burnett region up for auction or tender. While a radical plan to destroy all citrus trees in the Emerald area of Queensland to contain the outbreak of citrus canker has not been taken up, authorities are following an alternative containment plan. This will involve the destruction of about 30,000 trees on the 60-hectare block of the second property in the Emerald region where the disease was found.
