Door open to thousands of weeds
17 Nov 2004

A loophole in Australia's import protocols allows individuals, plant collectors or nurseries to import the seed of 4000 agricultural and environmental weeds without a permit. Biosecurity Australia's permitted seed list allows whole species groups to be imported into Australia without any form of weed risk assessment. There are 2,916 on the list that contains 125,241 species, of which about 4,000 are known weeds overseas. The 2004 Economic Impact of Weeds in Australia report found weeds cost Australian agriculture $4 billion annually.
