Plant breeders sow seeds of suspicion 22 Nov 2004
Private investigators are on the prowl in the countryside in search of crops grown with unlicenced seed varieties. The Australian Seed Federation says there had not been one prosecution for abuse of seed varieties since plant variety rights became law in the late 1980s. It is not clear how many private investigators are being used or what methods they will employ. Plant variety developers believe that illegal trading in proprietary seeds is common, and costs breeders hundreds of million of dollars each year. However, the Grains Council said it was ridiculous to have Dick Tracy lurking around farms.
