Apples blight NZ trade deal
13 Dec 2004

Australia and New Zealand still cannot resolve whether to allow New Zealand apples into Australia. The dispute is now in the hands of Biosecurity Australia, which will undertake a fresh scientific assessment over the risk to Australia's apple industry if New Zealand apples were allowed in. Australian growers claim this could open the door to fireblight. New Zealand and Australia have otherwise agreed to liberalise trade between the two countries. One immediate change is that New Zealand wine producers will be entitled to a tax rebate on sales in Australia from next year following an agreement between the two governments. Australia grants its wine producers a $290,000 rebate for the first $1 million of sales to support small operators in the industry.
