Saturated soil promises healthy summer crops 17 Dec 2004
The big dry has turned into the big wet in what used to be drought-stressed New South Wales. Two thirds of the state is still officially experiencing drought conditions. But weekend storms dumped almost 200 millimetres of rain in some districts. Farmers now expect to plant more summer crop. In the State's north, soil moisture profiles are now virtually saturated. The Darling River is expecting its biggest flows in four years as a result of the past week's rain. In the south, the Monaro and Southern Tablelands grazing regions have registered some of their best rain in almost three years.
