Aussie tucker free to use European labels
23 Dec 2004

Australian food producers may be able to trademark their "feta" cheese, "kalamata" olives and "parma" ham in the European market, following a ruling by the World Trade Organisation. The WTO has found that Europe is in breach of global trade rules by using its "geographical indicators" system which acted as trade barriers. Australia and the US argued the EU system prevented competitors using their existing trademarks in the European market, which is a breach of intellectual property rights.
