Mango glut leave a sour taste for growers 18 Feb 2005
A glut of mangoes is changing the economics for growers of this iconic summer fruit. Prices down to below $2 each, with trays for less than $15, compared with up to $40 a tray in previous years. But a boon for consumers equates to one of the worst seasons in memory for growers. A five year plan developed by Horticulture Australia and the Australian Mango Industry Association found that the industry needed to create a market for the significant increases in production that were occurring in the traditional strongholds of northern Queensland, but also in the Northern Territory and Western Australia.
