One per cent levy imposed on farm chemicals
10 Mar 2005

Farm chemicals will cost more following a decision by the federal government to impose a levy of 0.9 per cent. The levy is to cover the deficit at the Australian Pesticide and Veterinary Medicines Authorit, the agency responsible for the registration of agricultural chemicals. Under the new system, chemical companies will be charged 40pc of the APVMA's cost of registering chemicals, with the remainder recouped via a levy of up to 0.9 per cent at the point of sale. The chemical industry estimates this could increase the wholesale price of glyphosates by 10 cents a litre.
