Canker introduced four years ago
18 Mar 2005

The origins of the citrus canker outbreak in the Emerald district of Queensland appear to relate to the importing on to the Evergreen Farms orchard of cuttings and seed from the US and Asia. The Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service detected a genotype of another introduced disease, citrus tristeza virus, but not canker. Queensland’s Department of Primary Industries has since established that an Asian strain of citrus canker was present on the foreign-owned Evergreen Farms orchard in early 2003, if not before then. Industry group Queensland Citrus Growers said losses due to the restriction on sales and removal of affected trees totalled more than $50 million.
