Riverland farmers look north for labour
23 Mar 2005

Horticulturists in the Riverland district will fly in workers from Cape York in far north Queensland in a bid to alleviate labour shortages. Two groups of eight young men aged 17 to 21 from Cape York and the Torres Strait left the tropics three months ago. They have been picking oranges at Waikerie in South Australia and pears and grapes near Mildura in Victoria.

The federal Department of Employment and Workplace Relations contributed $70,000 to fly them to Adelaide, pay the wages and costs of a supervisor, and cover the first week's rent in a caravan park.
