Labelling laws may be relaxed on imported fresh food
4 May 2005

Imported fresh food will no longer be subject to strict laws on country-of-origin labelling. Under a new draft code drawn up by Food Standards Australia and New Zealand, fresh fruit, vegetables and seafood, the labelling of unpackaged produce as "imported" will become optional. Retailers who choose not to label imported produce will only have to inform customers "upon request" of its country of origin. Queensland fruit and vegetable growers lobby group GroCom has branded the new code absurd. The Victorian Farmers Federation said that without import labelling, farmers would lose their local market advantage.
