No compensation for most Emerald orchardists 7 Jun 2005
Agriculture authorities in Queensland will require growers to destroy all citrus orchards in the Emerald region in the state’s Central Highlands. All mandarin, orange, lemon and lime trees, with an estimated value of $100 million, must be removed. Compensation will be paid only to those growers whose orchards actually suffered from the canker disease. Growers who did not have the disease will not receive any compensation. Growers have already removed 370,000 trees since discovery of the disease in late 2004. Another 130,000 trees must be removed.
