Small vegetable growers urged to leave the land 6 Jul 2005
The number of vegetable growers in Australia may need to decline sharply, from around 4,300 now to fewer than 1,000. The average size of horticultural farms in Australia is 21 hectares. In California, the average farm size is 56 hectares, and in Florida the average farm size is 166 hectares. Like broadacre and mixed farms profiled in a Productivity Commission report, small farms make low rates of return and many make negative returns, with unprofitable farms supported by off-farm income and the occasional taxpayer subsidy.
