Mixed support for home grown produce
20 Jul 2005

HomeGrown, a not-for-profit entity pushing country of origin labelling, says a trial of its green and gold label on fresh produce at 110 Coles supermarkets demonstrated that more than 80 per cent of shoppers wants to “buy Australian”. HomeGrown said 77 per cent would “pay a bit more” for local produce and 99 per cent said they wanted to know more about the origins of their food. However, surveys by RetailWorld found that of the top 25 selling supermarket items, only one – Bega cheese – was Australian owned. The survey excluded fresh food.
