Food labelling laws extended to fresh produce
20 Jul 2005

All fresh fruit, vegetables and seafood sold in Australia will have to clearly identify its country of origin under a new draft labelling standard. The new standard is contained in a draft code being drawn up by Food Standards Australia New Zealand.

The new standard will not only demand that imported unpackaged and packaged produce is labelled with its country of origin, but that local fresh produce is also clearly marked as Australian. Australia's existing food labelling laws only require overseas unpackaged produce to be labelled as ``imported'', with no labelling required on Australian fresh produce.
