Citrus growers seek biosecurity levy
28 Jul 2005

Citrus growers want a biosecurity levy imposed on citrus fruit sales to raise funds to combat exotic pests and diseases. The proposal comes in the wake of the incursion of citrus canker in the Emerald district in central Queensland. Australian Citrus Growers, the industry lobby, will put the proposed levy to a vote of members at a special meeting of delegates later this year. For the time being the growers want to set the levy at zero, but want the principle of the levy agreed now. The federal government is not inclined to support the proposal, however.
