Processors take on growers over labelling
9 Aug 2005

The Australian Food and Grocery Council said the campaign by vegetable growers for clearer country-of-origin labelling would be unworkable and unreasonably expensive. The food processors’ lobby said a company producing a food containing 20 ingredients may source produce from as many as 50 local and international suppliers. The AFGC said the industry has spent more than $350 million implementing labelling laws introduced in late 2002. Those laws deal with allergy threats and nutrition. Ausveg, the growers’ lobby, wants better labelling.
