Too few economies of scale in horticulture
11 Aug 2005

Imports of frozen vegetables have increased by 36 per cent over the last two years. Imported semi-processed foods, such as canned tomatoes, are also rising quickly in some lines of vegetables. The rising level of imports will drive a faster rate of change in horticulture. Some consultants believe that Australia’s 4500 horticulture farmers need to consolidate quickly, to perhaps only 900 in order to realise economies of scale. Financial Review, 11/08/05
